An identity found – Town Destroyer’s “Youth Cult” aims to shattered expectations

Ed Note: This is a follow up to my previous review of Town Destroyer’s album. Thank you, enjoy.

Town Destroyer has released a new single titled “Youth Cult.” The song is proving that perhaps Town Destroyer is fully understanding their sound and what their mark they aim to make in this world is.

“Youth Cult” is a relatively short song compared to their previous outings. It contains no spoken word that their previous songs had. But what it does contain is intensity, drive, and a unique sound.

Where their previous songs aimed to mimic their contemporaries, “Youth Cult” aims to set itself apart. This song almost takes on a metalcore vibe to it as the song plays out. It honestly sounds a lot like The Warriors, with elements of Skylines and Counterparts. “Youth Cult” creates an identity for Town Destroyer that their previous songs sadly we lacking.

Lyrically, this song is on par with their previous work, but a tad bit more aggressive to reflect the overall sound of the song. Where previous songs felt airy and light at times, this song feels more brutal. That is until the song descends into the madness that is the latter half of the song. There is a moment in this song that takes a step back and envelops the listener in a warm blanket of ear shattering reverie. It’s a part of the song that has to be heard to understood.

Town Destroyer is making it’s mark late in 2019 to let everyone know that they aren’t kidding around. They are understanding that the melodic hardcore scene is evolving and that they need to as well. With their previous outing lacking, “Youth Cult” picks up those missing pieces and fills the void. Town Destroyer has just begun.
